College Happenings

This is where it’s happening on campus

Hey there

I’m Jaime a semi-nontraditional college student. I am studying journalism at the University of Montana. Some days I love it some days I want to kill myself. Not literally, so don’t send any self help books.

I moved to Montana a few years ago from Wyoming. So it wasn’t a huge adjustment. I think cows out number people in both states.

I live in a small town outside Missoula. Missoula may sound familiar to anyone who has ever seen or read “A River Runs Through It” starring that smokin hottie and heartbreaker Brad Pitt.

It is perfect because out here in the valley people are pretty conservative about politics, religion and life in general. But a short drive away one can find liberals passionate about the environment, gay-rights, organic food and medical marijuana along with an assortment of other ideas. I like the mix.

I am on winter break for another three weeks and then it is back to becoming an overstressed psycho. Yeah I tend to take on too much and then freak out. You think I would learn, but I just pile on more and then adjust and deal.

When I am not in school, I work. I have two jobs. I work at a gym and I wait tables. I detest waiting tables but I do it for the money. Those $2.00 tips really pay the bills.

My boss at the restaurant is literally the best boss in the world. He makes up for crabby customers and crappy tips.

When I am not in school or working, I try to go skiing. I love skiing and I like to pretend like I am actually good at it. We have beautiful snow up here and very affordable ski areas. There is nothing like a day on the slopes. It is therapeutic.

Skiing makes it easy for me to say life is good.

  6. Jaime,
What a great sense of humor. I too, was LOL. Sounds like the main thing that’s changed since I went to college, (yes they had schools way back then) is the cost. Try to keep busy and write your mom and dad more often. Love ya and will be checking back.

  9. Congrats on the paid gig. I bet it’s a great feeling to use your degree after all these years of wondering, “Am I ever going to use this?” Bye-bye waitressing! You deserve a break. Get your ass up here to Big Sky for some of that “theraputic” skiing. I can’t wait to see you! I love you and I’m very proud of you.

  13. Hey James.
I think your Dad needs his own blog: “A-day-in-the-life-of-Bruce-without-his-kids”….
You’re article was terrific. You write so well, it really could’ve been longer and I would have kept on reading it!!!! I’m impressed. Sammy read it and it made her laugh. [I asked her if she knew what a 'smokin hottie' is and she said "No."....good girl!] Keep showing us your stuff; we’re so proud of you and we’re enjoying your work!

  15. Jaime,
I am so proud of you. School can be exhausting and seem to never end. It will pay off in the end. Like my dad says, “Education is something that nobody can ever take away from you.” I love you like a sister and wish nothing but the best for you!

  18. Jamie –

I love your blog. Good luck with the skiing as the weather here is way too nice. I am just proud of you! I have an idea about the $2.00 tips. How about you hit on the perverted old men and maybe they will tip you a little more.

  19. Jamie,
I learned about your blog from your mother. It has been enjoyable reading. I have been experiencing the non-traditional student thing from a lot further out than you. After many years I returned to get my Master’s Degree online at the age of 54. (I had never even heard of APA format for papers.) After plodding along at one class a semester, I will graduate in May and officially get the degree before I am eligible for social security! Hang in there and continue with your entertaining blog.

  22. Amber, I tried being nice to the perverted old men and guess what happened? One of them asked me out. Seriously, he was like 90 and told me he would really like to spend some time with me. I was like you are older than my grandpa. Gross.
